Do Not Worry - October 31, 2021

Bible Study “Do Not Worry”

Share:  Your highs (something that made you happy) and lows (something that made you sad) this week with others around you or write them down.

Jesus wanted to remind people to focus on what was most important, and to put God first and foremost in our lives.  This is something that people of His time struggled with, and it’s something we often have a hard time doing today, too.  We get distracted and think we need to have more or fancier things.  Sometimes we worry about what we have or what we do not have.  This takes our minds off of God.  In this passage, Jesus wanted to share with people that God will take care of the things that we need. Our job is to build Heavenly treasures. How do we do that?

Opening Prayer:   Dear God, you are wonderful, beautiful, creative, and we worship you today.  We pray that the lesson today can touch our hearts so that we can learn to trust you in everything.  We love you! Amen

Please open your Bibles to Luke 12: 22-34 and read or read the scriptures below.

Luke 12: 22-34

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Reflection Questions:

  • Jesus give five reasons in 12:22-30 why we shouldn’t worry and stuggle over the material needs of life, food, clothing, shelter etc.  What are they?
  • Jesus refers to our focus on material possessions in three negative ways. The first is "worry." What are the other two:
    • worry (12:22, 24, 25)
    • ________ (12:28b)
    • ________ (12:32)
  • Why should you sell possessions and give to the poor (12:32)?  What sense does that make?
  • Where is your treasure?  Where is your heart? (12:34)   How can you know?

When Jesus talks about the Kingdom He is talking about the new way of living He came to establish. Jesus came into the world to show us what God is really like. God is a God of love. When we are living our lives as members of the Kingdom of God we are transformed people.

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, Our lives are filled with many things we worry about. With all of the things going on in the world around us we find it hard not to worry.  Would you draw us close to You?  We trust You. We want our lives to be lasting, our treasures to be in heaven, and our satisfaction to be in living our lives with You.  Amen.
