Senior Ministries

Scripture admonishes us to honor our fathers and mothers and to care for the most vulnerable among us.  To that end, Salem Lutheran Church reaches out to serve its senior members with the following ministries:

  • Regular Pastoral Visits: Shut-ins are visited individually by the Visitation Pastor or Senior Pastor on a regular basis for sharing Scripture, prayer, or Holy Communion.
  • Monthly Home Communion: Shut-ins have Holy Communion brought to them by Communion Assistants on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Devotional Materials: Large-print devotional books are made available to shut-ins each quarter of the year.
  • Mailed Church Bulletins and Newsletters: Sunday bulletins and monthly newsletters are mailed to shut-ins so that they may better participate in the radio and television broadcasts of Salem’s services.
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry: Prayer shawls made by members of Salem are given to shut-ins to remind them that they are always surrounded with God’s loving care and remembered in prayer by the congregation.
  • Birthday Rose Ministry: Shut-ins receive a red rose on the occasion of their 90th birthday and each birthday thereafter to remind them how special they are.
  • Prayer Support: Each Sunday during worship, five shut-ins are identified in the bulletin and included in the prayers of intercession.
  • Lay Visitation: Salem has concerned and trained members who volunteer to visit shut-ins wishing to receive such lay visitors.

“O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.  So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to all the generations to come.”  (Psalm 71:17-18)
