Bible Study “Shepherds Visit Jesus”

Share:  Your highs (something that made you happy) and lows (something that made you sad) this week with others around you or write them down.

The Bible story today is referring to the day the Shepherds worshipped Christ in the manger who was the gift from God for our sins. They believed in the Good News so they received and witness the birth of Jesus. We must learn to trust and to be strong in our faith for God is here with us.

Opening Prayer:  Thank you, God, for bringing Jesus into the world. Amen.

Please open your Bibles to Luke 2:15-21 and read or read the scriptures below.

Luke 2:15-21

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

Questions:

  • Who appeared to the shepherds?
  • How did the Shepherds feel?
  • What did the angel tell the shepherds about Jesus?
  • Where did they find Jesus?
  • Why were the Shepherds glorifying and praising God?
  • What happened on the eighth day?

It was just another night in the fields for the shepherds we read about in Luke chapter 2, until the angels appeared and told them the Messiah had come as a baby and was nearby in Bethlehem. Like many Jews at that time, the shepherds were waiting for the Messiah and hoping He would come at any time. It’s not difficult to imagine how excited they were as they rushed to find the baby, and then went to tell others about Jesus. We should be excited about Jesus! But the story of the shepherds and Jesus’ birth is also about the Kingdom of God and the fact that He often involves people in His Kingdom who aren’t important to the world. God doesn’t choose people based on their social status.
