Bible Study “The Glory of the Lord”

Share:  Your highs (something that made you happy) and lows (something that made you sad) this week with others around you or write them down.

Did you know that God says in the Bible, “I know you by name”?

Is your life hurried by to many family, school or work responsibilities?

Think about a time when you were tired, discouraged or frustrated.

Do you bargain with God in times of difficulties?

Where do you feel the presence of God?

When do you give God the Glory?

Let’s read about how Moses asks God to be made clearer so he might better understand how best to follow God and be a better leader.

Please open your Bibles to Exodus 33: 12-23 and read or read the scriptures below.

Exodus 33: 12-23

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”

18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”

19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”

21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

Project:  Option 1 - Take a blank piece of paper and markers or colored pencils and write the word glorious somewhere on the paper and then write or draw something to help you remember the glory of God.  You can take a mirror and attempt to write in reflection by holding the paper up facing the mirror and looking at the paper in the mirror while writing on the paper or draw Moses on the rock and God passing by only seeing his back

Option 2 - God Knows us By Name - God know us by name and shows us God's presence in many ways.  Create a Name banner that will remind you of how God Makes God's presence known in your life.    Take a sheet of paper and write your name down the side.  Then, for each letter, list how God makes his presence known to you.  Note:  If you have a short name, do first and last or first and middle name.

Example using FRANK

  • Friends - I feel God's presence when I am with my friends.
  • Rainbow - I can see God's presence in the rainbow.
  • Ants - Remind me that God is busy at work even if I can't see it all the time.
  • Night - I can feel God's presence at night, when the world goes quiet and the stars come out.
  • Kindness - I can experience God's presence when someone is kind to me or when I am kind to someone else.

You can use words, pictures, poetry, whatever you want to create your name.

Prayer: Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts.  Created by you, let us live in your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen
